Details: Amazon.ca Tucked away in British Columbia, Upstairs Recordings endures a certain isolation from the main centers of dance culture, but that hasn't stopped the label from putting out some of the most consistent and enticing downtempo of the last few years. This compilation continues the trend, showing off an expanded roster of producers while mixing in new work from old hats like Don Verbrilli, a.k.a. Telefuzz, whose Sleep helped define the label's ambient-leaning, jazz-influenced, deeply chilled sound. Montreal's Miguel Graça contributes the excellent "Salamino," a choppy piece of drum and bass on Valium that continues the slight movement toward more uptempo styles that distinguished his April 2002 release, Monkey Mass. Like Zero 7 but with a darker edge, Blue Light One finds a smooth poetry that works equally well whether you're coming down from a long night out, or setting the mood for a long night in. --Matthew Cooke
