Author: THE DOORS
Format: Best of
Release Date: 28-10-1997
Details: Product Description Only one disc (entitled "Band Favorites") of this 4-CD set includes otherwise-available studio tracks; the rest is WHOLLY devoted to unreleased material. Taken together, it's three hours of new music from the Doors, packaged with a 60-page book containing song-by-song commentary by the band members and 80 unseen photos. Here are some details: an entire 1970 concert in New York that featured several ( Gloria; Money; Build Me a Woman/Sunday Trucker ) rarely performed songs; demos/outtakes of My Eyes Have Seen You; Moonlight Drive; End of the Night; Queen of the Highway , and some lesser-known songs like Adagio and I Will Never Be Untrue ; Five to One from the infamous 1969 Miami concert; Hello to the Cities from The Ed Sullivan Show ; a very early, 1965 demo entitled Go Insane ; Break on Through from their last live performance at the Isle of Wight, and more. A one-of-a-kind portrait of a one-of-a-kind band. Amazon.ca Bruce Botnick, the Doors' long-time engineer, described Box Set as a comedy album, and he's not far off the mark. At times, this four-CD mixed bag sounds like the precursor to Lou Reed's Take No Prisoners, with Morrison an incoherent ranting drunk (think Lenny Bruce, minus the wit or insight). Early demos show the Doors sounding like a less-intense version of the Seeds, all amphetamine blues swagger. The Live from Madison Square Garden disc neatly replaces the execrable Absolutely Live, catching the band in a particularly intense performance. But for all the unearthed material, Box Set does little to expand the Doors' legacy. The much-ballyhooed reunion from beyond the grave, "Orange Country Suite", will only excite those who consider "Riders on the Storm" this band's finest moment. This album is for obsessive completists only. --Steven MirkinEND
