Details: Amazon.ca Modern-day devotees of "ironic" rock need look no further for side-splitting satisfaction than this originally irony-free debut from Aldo Nova. Serious students of early '80s cheese will also be sent into spasms of air-guitar wanking. Everyone else--run. Nova deserves some credit as an innovator. A pillar of Canadian pop metal in the early '80s who paired his own slick guitar leads with synthesizers, he anticipated by a year or two the wave of overblown poodle rock later ridden by the likes of Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. Hit singles "Fantasy" (still instantly recognizable, announcing itself with its squealing, Dazed and Confused guitar motif and robo backbeat) and "Foolin' Yourself" pushed this album to sales of over one million copies worldwide. But, as the number of "Fantasy" rewrites and dripping power ballads on the album indicate, the well would soon run dry, and Nova's dance with pop stardom would be short-lived. He later re-emerged as a producer with the fledgling Celine Dion, as a guitar gun-for-hire with Bon Jovi, and as a songwriter. Generally overlooked today, Aldo Nova is nonetheless a blueprint for '80s hard rock--right down to the unintentionally hilarious album art. -- Kieran Grant Product Description Nova, Aldo
