Charlie Hunter
Author: Hunter, Charlie
Format: Import
Release Date: 27-10-2006
Details: Amazon.ca Hunter has made his mark on the guitar world by using an eight-string instrument and simple electronic processing to fake the sound of a Hammond organ. His way of playing chords, melody and bassline simultaneously is some technical feat, rather as was Stanley Jordan's orchestral solo guitar style in the 1980s. There's less flash about Hunter's performances, but one is still bound to wonder what new musical result can be got from the imitation of several instruments by one. The answer in both cases is probably not much, but Hunter nonetheless gives good musical value. The title sounds like a debut, but he's done several other albums on Blue Note, and this follows a similar path, the tunes funky vamps and jazz themes, his tone bubbly and sub-aquatic, his lines suggesting a half-time John Scofield. Tenor Peter Apfelbaum, trombonist Josh Roseman and drummer Leon Parker add extra instrumental colour. -- Mark Gilbert
